Paper Mache Renaissance.

There is a renaissance in Jakmèl, Haiti. The artisans who make paper mache masks for Carnival have new inspiration. The Carnival tradition has ancient roots and the traditional masks of devils and mystical animals are a yearly staple. Now these old devils have had a style makeover and are painted in polka dots or colourful flower prints. Where did this makeover come from? The wealth of new motifs originates from the used clothing piles that decorate many Haitian streets. Known as Kennedy, after JFK started shipping tons of used clothes to Haiti in the 1960s, these indigenous thrift shops are where most Haitians shop for clothing. The artisans of Jakmèl have created a unique Haitian story of fashion fused with culture and sustainability -- and a tribute to President Kennedy.
