The Bay of Jakmel was the New World’s busiest port in the eighteenth century with an economy built upon coffee exports to Europe. Today, the spacious colonial warehouses in the gracious town of Jakmel no longer store coffee but artisans. The old warehouses have been converted to serve different muses: artisan studios, a film school as well as many craft boutiques. Jakmel has a new spirit -- the creative artists and their products form Jakmel’s new economy. Jakmelians have always admired the beauty around them. Through art they export that beauty to the world.
